Total Hours: 111

The first ETD that I cataloged today was an education leadership dissertation titled Assessing Interests: Harry Dexter Kitson's Influence on the Development of Vocational Guidance and College Career Advising by Kathryn M. Craig.  This dissertation is about the influence of Harry Dexter Kitson on vocational psychology, vocational guidance, and college career advising.  The first subject heading that I thought I should put was Kitson's name which I later decided to subdivide by "Influence."  I easily found the subject heading "Vocational guidance," but there wasn't one for vocational psychology or college career advising.  I decided to use the subdivision "Psychological aspects" on the "Vocational guidance" subject heading for a third subject heading for this work.  I couldn't think of anything else that would be relevant.  The call number was pretty straight forward.  Wikipedia was not necessary for this record.  Here are the subject headings I came up with:

600 10 Kitson, Harry Dexter ǂx Influence.
650 0 Vocational guidance.
650 0 Vocational guidance ǂx Psychological aspects.

Sevim suggested that I add the subdivisions "United States--History" to "Vocational guidance."  I thought this was a good idea.

600 10 Kitson, Harry Dexter ǂx Influence.
650 0 Vocational guidance ǂz United States ǂx History.
650 0 Vocational guidance ǂx Psychological aspects.

The second ETD that I cataloged today was a teaching, learning, and curriculum studies dissertation titled Implications of Classroom Writing Instruction Emphasizing Imagination, Creativity, and Dialogue: A Case Study by Steven J. Howell.  This dissertation is a study about how we teach students to write and how we can do it differently by emphasizing creativity and imagination.  The first heading that I came up with was "Writing--Study and teaching (Secondary)--United States" because the students studied were all in high school in the United States.  The study took place in Ohio, but it's not about Ohio students specifically.  I also chose the heading "Language arts--United States" because it seems to fit what she is talking about.  I chose the call number LB1631 ǂb .H69 2011.  Wikipedia was not needed.  Here are my subject headings:

650 0 Language arts ǂz United States.
650 0 Writing ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary) ǂz United States.

Sevim liked my headings, but she thought I should change "Language arts" to "Language arts (Secondary)."  I should have thought of that beforehand.  We also found the subject heading "Creative writing (Secondary education--United States."  So here are the headings I ended up with:

650 0 Creative writing (Secondary education) ǂz United States.
650 0 Writing ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary) ǂz United States.
650 0 Language arts (Secondary) ǂz United States.

The third ETD that I cataloged today was a foundations, leadership, and administration dissertation titled A Legislative and Judicial Analysis of Sexual Relationships between American Secondary Students and Their Teachers by Joseph P. Clark.  This dissertation discusses the laws and legislation regarding sexual relationships between secondary students and teachers.  I had a lot of ideas for subject headings, but many of them didn't work out.  I found the subject heading "Teacher-student relationships," and I wanted to use the subdivision "Sexual Behavior" with it, but that subdivision only allows it to be used "under names of individual persons, classes of persons, ethnic groups, and individual animals and groups of animals."  None of these categories fit that subject heading, so I wasn't able to combine them.  But after doing a search in WorldCat to see if someone had used that heading before, I found the subject heading "Child sexual abuse by teachers" which I decided to subdivided with "Laws and legislation" and "United States."  The dissertation also talks about wrongful termination lawsuits by teachers.  For this concept, I used the subject heading "High school teachers--Dismissal of--Laws and legislation--United States."  There was also a chapter on student filed lawsuits, but I couldn't think of a subject heading for that one.  Sharon is going to think about it and get back to me about it.  Here are the headings that I have so far:

650 0 Child sexual abuse by teachers ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 High school teachers ǂx Dismissal of ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 Teacher-student relationship ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.

Sharon suggested I add the heading "Sexual harassment in education--Laws and legistlation--United States," and I decided to add it.  Here's what I have:

650 0 Child sexual abuse by teachers ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 High school teachers ǂx Dismissal of ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 Teacher-student relationship ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 Sexual harassment in education ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
