Day 18

 Day 18
10/28/2011
Start time: 8:00
End time: 12:00
Hours Worked: 4
Total Hours: 138

Today I will be only working a half day and working on mainly ETDs.  The first ETD I worked on is the last one of my third batch.  It's a teaching, learning, and curriculum studies dissertation titled Young Children Conceptualize the Relationships Among Positive and Negative Numbers and Zero by Peggy D. ManchesterThe dissertation is about how young children think about negative numbers and how they have intiutions about them.  I think this is part of a movement to teach children about negative numbers at a younger age when they might think about it more intuitively. I had a hard time thinking up subject headings for this because there wasn't a subject heading for mathematics and children.  I felt that the subdivision "Study and teaching (Primary)" didn't really convey what the dissertation was about.  I ended up thinking of the headings "Mathematics--Study and teaching (Primary)" and "Numbers, Negative--Study and teaching (Primary)," but I wasn't completely satisfied with these headings.  So, I did a search on WorldCat and it lead me to the heading "Number concept in children" which fits perfectly.  I also found a record that added the subdivision "Psychological aspects" to the study and teaching headings.  I think this set of subject headings is much better at conveying what this dissertation is about.  My call number was based on "Number concept in children."  My suject headings are:

650 0 Number concept in children.
650 0 Numbers, Negative ǂx Study and teaching (Primary) ǂx Psychological aspects.
650 0 Mathematics ǂx Study and teaching (Primary) ǂx Psychological aspects.

Sevim liked what I had but wanted me to change Primary to Elementary.

Day 17, Mostly Microfilm

Day 17
10/25/2011
Start time: 8:00
[1 Hour Lunch]
End time: 5:00
Hours Worked: 8
Total Hours: 134

Most of my day involved cataloging microfilm TDs.  I started the day by checking the records that I worked on Friday morning.  Sevim thought I did pretty good work, but there were some changes that I had to make.  I replaced the OCLC records of the microfilm TDs that had OCLC records and put them into KentLINK as well.  For the original record I did on Friday, I just uploaded to both OCLC and KentLINK.

I also worked on five new microfilm TDs.  Three had regular records that could be mostly copied, one had a German language record that I could derive some information for but had to create a new record for, and thel last one didn't have a record in OCLC, so I had to create an original record.  One of the three that had a record in OCLC had some major errors and it looked like it had been merged with a photocopy record.  I don't have as much detail on the microfilm TDs because I don't keep as good records for those as I do for the ETDs.  Oh well.

The purely original microfilm TD that I worked on today was titled The selection and training of salesmen for the machine tools industry by James D. Robenstine.  The title basically said what this TD was about.  I chose two subject headings:  "Sales personel--Training of" and "Machine-tool industry."  I chose the call number HF5439.8.  Here's the way my subject headings look in Connexion:

650 0 Sales personnel ǂx Training of.
650 0 Machine-tool industry.

Day 16

Day 16
10/21/2011
Start time: 8:00
[1 Hour Lunch]
End time: 5:00
Hours Worked: 8
Total Hours: 126

Today I started with cataloging five microfilm theses and dissertations.  Four of the microfilm TDs had OCLC records which I merely had to go and correct any errors.  The other one did not have a record in OCLC, so I had to do completely original cataloging for it.  This microfilm TD was an education thesis titled Survey of methods and materials in the teaching of transcription in public secondary schools by Ethel Luella Mart.  Because doing in depth reading on the microfilm reading is difficult, I only read a couple of pages to determine what the subject headings were.  Both the title and those first couple of pages both gave me the idea that this thesis was simply about teaching transcription skills in secondary schools, so I used the subject heading "Transcription--Study and teaching (Secondary)."  It was pretty simple.  Everything else was pretty straightforward.  Here are the subject headings:

650 0 Transcription ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary)

Sevim liked both my subject heading and my call number.

After finishing with the microfilm records, I started cataloging some ETDs.  The first ETD I cataloged today was a teaching, learning, and curriculum studies dissertation titled Skype™: A Portal Into the 21st Century in a Secondary Spanish Classroom by Colleen A. Blaurock.  This thesis was a study that consisted of pairing up Non-Native Speakers (NNSs) with Native Speakers (NSs) over Skype to help the NNS learn the language.  This study researched students who were learning Spanish, but it could easily applied to other languages.  I didn't have a hard time of thinking of analyzing the concepts of this dissertation, but I did have a little difficulty chosing which subject headings I wanted.  I tried to find a subject heading for foreign language educatin, but there was not a heading for that.  Next, I tried to find a heading for second language education and found "Second language acquisition."  However this heading is only used for sociological and psychological aspects of learning a second language rather than just teaching and learning a second language.  I decided to use this heading because the dissertation talks is also about the experiences of the students who participated in the study.  To convey the educational aspect, I chose "Language and languages--Study and teaching (Secondary)."  There were many different methods in the narrower topics of that heading, and Wikipedia and a Google search helped me learn a little more about them so I could rule them out.  I also wanted to have a heading to bring out the technology aspect of this dissertation.  There were a few options.  The first one I found was "Computer assisted instruction," but this heading is more for when automated computer applications instruct people.  I also found "Educational technology" which I decided to use because the article is about using Skype as an educational technology.  The call number I chose was P53.6 which means that it's about the study and teaching of oral communication of languages.  I'm not 100% happy with this number and might change it to the general works number.  Here are my subject headings:

650 0 Language and languages ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary).
650 0 Second language acquisition.
650 0 Educational technology.

Sevim liked the subject headings I had, but she suggested that I created a subject heading for the concept of computer mediated communication.  The subject heading for that concept is "Telematics."  I also changed the call number to P53.855 to reflect that it's about technological innovation rather than oral communication.  Here are the final subject headings:

650 0Language and languages ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary)
650 0Second language acquisition.
650 0Telematics.
650 0Educational technology.

The second ETD that I cataloged was a Foundations, Leadership, and Administration dissertation titled The Third Culture Kid (TCK) Experience: Adult-TCKS’ Reflections On Their Multicultural Childhood, Its Impact On Student-Teacher Relationships In U.S. Classrooms And Their Recommendations For Multicultural Teacher Education In The United States by Gretchen L. Espinetti.  This dissertation is about the Third Culture Kid (TCK) and how adult ones can help teachers with multicultural education.  TCKs are children who are raised in a different culture than their parents and move back to their parent's country of origin at some point.  The dissertation also talks about teacher-student relationships.  This one was tough because a lot of the concepts in the book had no subject headings associated with them, so I had a hard time choosing subject headings.  Wikipedia was helpful in me gaining an understanding of some of the concepts presented like TCK, but it wasn't helpful in choosing any subject headings.  I couldn't find a heading that had anything to do with TCK or any iteration of the concept like multicultural children, trans-cultural children, and cross-cultural children.  None of them were in LCSH.  So I had to focus on other aspects of the work.  I decided to use the heading "Multicultural education--United States" since multicultural education is mentioned in the title, abstracted, and the work itself.  And since it talks about how TCKs can help multicultural teacher education, I decided on the subject heading "Teachers--Training of--United States."  The relationships between TCKs and their teachers is also discussed in the dissertation, so I decided to use the heading "Teacher-student relationships--United States" based on that.  I performed a WorldCat search on TCKs to find my last heading which is "American students--Foreign influences."  I decided to use that subject heading because I found it is the best way to give a heading to the concept of TCK.  I don't know if it'll work or not, but I thought I'd give it a try.  Here are my subject headings:

650 0Multicultural education ǂz United States.
650 0American students ǂx Foreign influences.
650 0Teachers ǂx Training of ǂz United States.
650 0Teacher-student relationships ǂz United States.

Sevim really liked this ETD and wanted to read it.  She liked the subject headings, but she thought that I should take out the "Teachers--Training of--United States" because the paper wasn't about that and only gave reccommendations for it.  She also said that I need to change the call number slightly to show that it's about the United States.  Here are the final subject headings:

650 0Multicultural education ǂz United States.
650 0American students ǂx Foreign influences.
650 0Teacher-student relationships ǂz United States.

Day 15, First Time With Microfilm

Day 15

End time: 4:00

Total Hours: 118

I started the day by getting Sevim to check the records that I did on Friday.  All the changes for those records was put in Friday's blog post.

Today, I worked on microfilm for the first time today.  I learned how to operate the machine and view the microfilm.  I learned that it hurts my eyes to look at for too long.  First, Sevim got me to read a document that introduced me to some of the things that are different about a microform record.  Then, Sevim and I looked at some theses and dissertations that were on microfilm, and she wanted me to find the information to check to see if the records from OCLC were correct.  There was one reel of mircofilm that didn't have a record on OCLC (which was actually a government document rather than a theses or dissertation), so I had to pick out the information necessary to create a record.  Then, Sevim set me to correct the other records and create an original record for the government document.  This record wasn't that hard to make except for a series statement that I didn't know what to put in.  I did some searches on WorldCat to figure out what to put in the 490 and 830 fields.  The government document was a study of art activities for mentally handicapped children.  I chose the subject heading "Art--Study and teaching" and Children with mental disabilities--Education--United States."  Sevim checked my work and said it was pretty good overall except for a couple of changes.  She suggested that I subdivide both my subject headings with "United States."  Here's what I ended up with:

650 0 Children with mental disabilities ǂx Education ǂz United States.
650 0 Art ǂx Study and teaching ǂz United States.

The first ETD that I cataloged today was a teaching, learning, and curriculum studies dissertations titled Mid-career teachers’ perspectives on the sustaining power of hope: A Q methodological study by Anita C. Levine.  This ETD was about how mid-career teachers cope with stress and burnout.  I had a lot of ideas for subject headings, but the ideas that I had which I thought fit the aboutness of the dissertation the most were not in LCSH.  Also I had trouble connecting concepts like hope and hopelessness to teachers with LCSH.  There was not a heading for teacher attrition, but there was a heading for teacher stress which is "Teacher--Job stress" which I subdivided by "United States."  I had a lot of other concepts that I wanted add.  So I added "Adjustment (Psychology)--United States" (for coping), "Burn out (Psychology)," "Hope," "Despair--United States," and "Teacher morale--United States."  I didn't need Wikipedia for this one.  Here's the subject headings that I used:

650 0 Teachers ǂx Job stress ǂz United States.
650 0 Adjustment (Psychology) ǂz United States
650 0 Burn out (Psychology)
650 0 Hope.
650 0 Despair ǂz United States.
650 0 Teacher morale ǂz United States.

When Sevim looked over this one, she like most of the subject headings I had but said that I should get rid of some and change the order of the ones left over.  She suggested that I remove "Burn out (Psychology)" because she didn't really feel that someone searching for an article on burnout would be happy to find this article and "Despair--United States" because when you have two opposite concepts, you usually chose only one.  She also suggested that I move "Teacher morale--United States" closer to the top.  Sevim wanted to remove "Adjustment (Psychology)--United States," but I convinced her to keep it since it is the subject heading for conveying the idea of coping which is what the article is about.  Here are the final headings that I chose:

650 0Teachers ǂx Job stress ǂz United States.
650 0Teacher morale ǂz United States.
650 0Hope.
650 0Adjustment (Psychology) ǂz United States.

Day 14
10/14/2011
Start time: 8:00
[2 Hour Lunch]
End time: 5:00
Hours Worked: 7
Total Hours: 111

The first ETD that I cataloged today was an education leadership dissertation titled Assessing Interests: Harry Dexter Kitson's Influence on the Development of Vocational Guidance and College Career Advising by Kathryn M. Craig.  This dissertation is about the influence of Harry Dexter Kitson on vocational psychology, vocational guidance, and college career advising.  The first subject heading that I thought I should put was Kitson's name which I later decided to subdivide by "Influence."  I easily found the subject heading "Vocational guidance," but there wasn't one for vocational psychology or college career advising.  I decided to use the subdivision "Psychological aspects" on the "Vocational guidance" subject heading for a third subject heading for this work.  I couldn't think of anything else that would be relevant.  The call number was pretty straight forward.  Wikipedia was not necessary for this record.  Here are the subject headings I came up with:

600 10 Kitson, Harry Dexter ǂx Influence.
650 0 Vocational guidance.
650 0 Vocational guidance ǂx Psychological aspects.

Sevim suggested that I add the subdivisions "United States--History" to "Vocational guidance."  I thought this was a good idea.

600 10 Kitson, Harry Dexter ǂx Influence.
650 0 Vocational guidance ǂz United States ǂx History.
650 0 Vocational guidance ǂx Psychological aspects.

The second ETD that I cataloged today was a teaching, learning, and curriculum studies dissertation titled Implications of Classroom Writing Instruction Emphasizing Imagination, Creativity, and Dialogue: A Case Study by Steven J. Howell.  This dissertation is a study about how we teach students to write and how we can do it differently by emphasizing creativity and imagination.  The first heading that I came up with was "Writing--Study and teaching (Secondary)--United States" because the students studied were all in high school in the United States.  The study took place in Ohio, but it's not about Ohio students specifically.  I also chose the heading "Language arts--United States" because it seems to fit what she is talking about.  I chose the call number LB1631 ǂb .H69 2011.  Wikipedia was not needed.  Here are my subject headings:

650 0 Language arts ǂz United States.
650 0 Writing ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary) ǂz United States.

Sevim liked my headings, but she thought I should change "Language arts" to "Language arts (Secondary)."  I should have thought of that beforehand.  We also found the subject heading "Creative writing (Secondary education--United States."  So here are the headings I ended up with:

650 0 Creative writing (Secondary education) ǂz United States.
650 0 Writing ǂx Study and teaching (Secondary) ǂz United States.
650 0 Language arts (Secondary) ǂz United States.

The third ETD that I cataloged today was a foundations, leadership, and administration dissertation titled A Legislative and Judicial Analysis of Sexual Relationships between American Secondary Students and Their Teachers by Joseph P. Clark.  This dissertation discusses the laws and legislation regarding sexual relationships between secondary students and teachers.  I had a lot of ideas for subject headings, but many of them didn't work out.  I found the subject heading "Teacher-student relationships," and I wanted to use the subdivision "Sexual Behavior" with it, but that subdivision only allows it to be used "under names of individual persons, classes of persons, ethnic groups, and individual animals and groups of animals."  None of these categories fit that subject heading, so I wasn't able to combine them.  But after doing a search in WorldCat to see if someone had used that heading before, I found the subject heading "Child sexual abuse by teachers" which I decided to subdivided with "Laws and legislation" and "United States."  The dissertation also talks about wrongful termination lawsuits by teachers.  For this concept, I used the subject heading "High school teachers--Dismissal of--Laws and legislation--United States."  There was also a chapter on student filed lawsuits, but I couldn't think of a subject heading for that one.  Sharon is going to think about it and get back to me about it.  Here are the headings that I have so far:

650 0 Child sexual abuse by teachers ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 High school teachers ǂx Dismissal of ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 Teacher-student relationship ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.

Sharon suggested I add the heading "Sexual harassment in education--Laws and legistlation--United States," and I decided to add it.  Here's what I have:

650 0 Child sexual abuse by teachers ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 High school teachers ǂx Dismissal of ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 Teacher-student relationship ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.
650 0 Sexual harassment in education ǂx Laws and legislation ǂz United States.

Total Hours: 104

The first ETD I cataloged today was an MFA thesis, a play, titled Fire Dance by Michael S. Parsons.  This play is about two brothers who come together after their mother dies.  I choose the subject heading "Brothers--Drama."  The call number that I chose was PS3616.A775 ǂb F57 2011.  That's all that was needed and here's the headings I chose:

650 0 Brothers ǂv Drama.

Sevim suggested that I performed a WorldCat browse to find out where to put a call number.  The new call number that I decided on was PS3616.A7827 ǂb F57 2011.
The second ETD that I cataloged today was an art thesis, an exhibition, titled Darker Now by Andrew Martin Simmons.  The first heading was the name of the artist with the subdivision "Exhibitions."  The artist created two kinds of art for the thesis.  The first one was easily identified as ceramic sculpture, but the second one was a little more difficult to classify.  For the second one, he took leaflets and changed them in some way with what looked like paint.  I had a hard time figuring out what to do with this one.  I finally figured out using a combination of Wikipedia and ClassificationWeb that this was called mixed media painting and that there was a subject heading for it, so I chose that one.   So these are the headings that I ended up with:

60010Simmons, Andrew Martin ǂv Exhibitions.
650 0Ceramic sculpture ǂz United States ǂy 21st century ǂv Exhibitions.
650 0Mixed media painting ǂz United States ǂy 21st century ǂv Exhibitions.

Sevim said that this one was good.

The third ETD I cataloged today was a nursing dissertation titled The Experiences of Living with Excess Weight as an Adolescent: Everyday Life and Healthcare Encounters by Robin Lynne Brian.  This dissertation was a phenomenological study of the experiences of obese adolescents.  The subjects interviewed were limited to Ohio.  It wasn't really about anything other than this.  The subject heading I chose was "Obesity in adolescence--Ohio."  Here are the headings that I have:

650 0Obesity in adolescence ǂz Ohio.

Sevim suggested that I change the subdivision from "Ohio" to "United States" because it's not really important that it's in Ohio but that it's in the United States.  She also suggested I add the heading "Obesity in adolescence--United States--Psychological aspects."  These are the headings that I ended up with:

650 0 Obesity in adolescence ǂz United States.
650 0 Obesity in adolescence ǂz United States ǂx Psychological aspects.
The last ETD that I cataloged today was a political science dissertation titled International Labor Migration from Rural Central Asia: The Potential for Development in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan by Halil Kursad Aslan.  The dissertation was about people migrating from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to primarily Russia and what effect this had on economic development in both of those countries because of the money send back both countries by their workers in Russia.  I wanted to have a subject heading for migration, but that wasn't available.  The subject heading "Migrant workers" was for people moving from one part of the country to another, and "Foreign workers" is used from people who move from one country to another.  So I chose that heading and subdivided it by both countries.  Then I used the heading "Economic development" and subdivided it by both countries.  Then I created the subject headings "Kyrgyzstan--Emigration and immigration--Economic aspects" and "Uzbekistan--Emigration and immigration--Economic aspects" when I found the "Emigration and immigration--Economic aspects" subdivision.  Finally the dissertation talks a lot about remittance earnings.  A search in LCSH for remittance earnings lead me to the subject heading "Emigrant remittances" which I subdivided by both the countries.  I used "Foreign workers" as the basis for my call number and had trouble decided between two call numbers (both of which I had to construct from Tables).  The call numbers were for a Central Asian General Labor call number (HD8670.22) and one focused on Kyrgyzstan specifically (HD8670.24).  I chose the former, but I'm not sure about it.  I'm going to get Sevim to look at it.  Here are all the subject headings I used:

651 0Kyrgyzstan ǂx Emigration and immigration ǂx Economic aspects.
651 0Uzbekistan ǂx Emigration and immigration ǂx Economic aspects.
650 0Foreign workers ǂz Kyrgyzstan.
650 0Foreign workers ǂz Uzbekistan.
650 0Economic development ǂz Kyrgyzstan.
650 0Economic development ǂz Uzbekistan.
650 0Emigrant remittances ǂz Kyrgyzstan.
650 0Emigrant remittances ǂz Kyrgyzstan.

Sevim suggested that I remove both the "Foreign workers" headings because they imply that foreign workers are coming into Krygyzstan and Uzbekistan.  She also said that I should use the call number that focuses on Krygyzstan (HD8670.24) because the dissertation only talks about two countries.  Here are the headings that I ended up with:

651 0 Kyrgyzstan ǂx Emigration and immigration ǂx Economic aspects.
651 0 Uzbekistan ǂx Emigration and immigration ǂx Economic aspects.
650 0 Economic development ǂz Kyrgyzstan.
650 0 Economic development ǂz Uzbekistan.
650 0 Emigrant remittances ǂz Kyrgyzstan.
650 0 Emigrant remittances ǂz Uzbekistan.

Day 12
10/07/2011

End time: 5:00
Hours Worked: 8
Total Hours: 96

On Tuesday, I worked on a political science dissertation titled Deciding to Not Decide:  A Longitudinal Analysis of the Politics of Secondary Access on the U.S. Supreme Court by Andrew A. Povtak.  This is probably the most interesting ETD that I've read so far.  It's a study of the political leaning of the Supreme Court under three different Chief Justices (Warren, Burger, and Reinquist) and how that affects the Courts decision to not hear cases due to a lack of standing. I'm sure that I'm not describing it effectively, but I found it exceedingly interesting.  The first subject heading that I decided to put was "United States--Supreme Court--Decision making."  I found the Supreme Court heading pretty simply by using the name authority file, and eventually found the decision making subdivision while looking for a subject heading for it.  The dissertation made great use of the word "justiciability," so I thought that would be a great subject heading.  When looking it up in LCSH, it lead me to the subject heading "Judicial power" which I decided to subdivide by "United States."  I decided on the subject heading "Jurisdiction--United States" because the dissertation talks a lot about that concept.  The call number for this one was pretty tricky.  I found too call numbers that might work:  KF8742 or KF8748.  The first is a treatise or monograph about the Supreme Court and the second is a piece of criticism about the Supreme Court.  I decided on the former because it didn't really soon like a critical piece but rather an investigative or analytical piece.  Wikipedia wasn't really needed here.  Here are the subject headings I chose:

610 10 United States. ǂb Supreme Court ǂx Decision making.
650 0 Judicial power ǂz United States.
650 0 Jurisdiction ǂz United States.

Sevim was happy with my subject headings.  She thought that I should choose the KF8742 call number.

The second ETD that I cataloged today was a art education thesis titled A Depiction of Art Education in an Ohio Metropolitan Profit-Charter School System by Amanda L. Boyd.  This thesis investigates the experiences of six art teachers in profit-charter schools in Ohio Metro areas.  The thesis seemed to talk about At-Risk Youth, but I'm not sure if it was enough to warrant a subject heading.  I thought the thesis was about both art education and art educators, so I chose subject headings for both of them.  For art education, the LCSH subject heading is "Art--Study and teaching," and for art educators, the heading is "Art teachers."  I subdivided both of these by "Ohio."  Because the thesis was specifically about art education in Metropolitan Profit-Charter School Systems, I chose the headings "Charter schools" and "Metropolitan areas" and subdivided both of them by "Ohio."  I couldn't find any other subject headings for this.  Wikipedia wasn't really needed here.  Here are the headings I can up with:

650 0 Art ǂx Study and teaching ǂz Ohio.
650 0 Art teachers ǂz Ohio.
650 0 Charter schools ǂz Ohio.
650 0 Metropolitan areas ǂz Ohio.

Sevim only suggest a couple of changes to this one after talking with me about it.  She didn't think that the "Metropolitan areas--Ohio" subject heading was needed, and I should take it out.  Also, after checking what grades the teachers interviewed in the thesis taught, she suggested that I change the heading "Art--Study and teaching--Ohio" to "Art--Study and teaching (Elementary)--Ohio."  Those were the only changes that were needed.  Here are the final headings:

650 0Art ǂx Study and teaching (Elementary) ǂz Ohio.
650 0Art teachers ǂz Ohio ǂx Attitudes.
650 0Charter schools ǂz Ohio.
The third ETD that I cataloged today was an art thesis titled Embodying Fiber: Artful Adornment by Dena J. Gershon.  I have found that art theses can either be really hard or pretty easy.  This was ended up being not that difficult.  The art in this thesis is felt art, specifically felt jewelry.  The first think I did was make the artists name a subject heading and subdivided it by "Exhibitions."  Then I decided on two subject headings.  The first I decided on was "Felt work--United States--21st century--Exhibitions" and the second was "Textile jewelry--United States--21 century--Exhibitions."  I decided to make my call number using "Felt work" because I couldn't find a good correlation with "Textile Jewelry."  "Felt work" had a call number that allowed me to cutter by the artists, so I ended up with the call number "NK8998.G47 ǂb A4 2011."  Wikipedia was not necessary.  Here are the subject heading I ended up with:

600 10 Gershon, Dena J. ǂv Exhibitions.
650 0 Felt work ǂz United States ǂy 21st century ǂv Exhibitions.
650 0 Textile jewelry ǂz United States ǂy 21st century ǂv Exhibitions.

Sevim was happy with my work on this one.

The fourth ETD that I worked on today was a English dissertation titled A Critique of Vygotskian Scholarship in Writing and Literacy Studies: The Role of Marxist Dialectics in the Discussions of Method by Yuri Maziev.  This was one of the ETDs that doesn't have full-text access, so I had to catalog it using only the abstract.  This was one of the hardest ETDs I've cataloged thus far.  The abstract was really hard to read and not very helpful.  The dissertation has something to do with Lev S. Vygotsky's and Alexei N. Leont'ev's theories on writing and literacy studies.  It also uses Marxist dialetical method to do something.  The only subject headings I could think of were "Marxist criticism" and "Pyschology."  After being stumped for a little bit, I asked Sevim for help.  She was about as stumped as I was.  She suggested that we find some information about Vygotsky and Leont'ev studied.  We learned via Wikipedia that they studied developmental psychology with a special attention on language development.  Then, we performed a WorldCat search to determine what subject headings works by Vygotsky were cataloged under.  We found the subject heading "Psycholinguistics" came up several times, and because of this fact, we decided to use it instead of "Psychology."  Sevim wanted to take out "Marxist criticism," and I happily obliged her.  The call number was pretty straightforward.  Here's the subject heading we ended up with:

650 0 Psycholinguistics.

The fifth ETD that I worked on today is a psychology dissertation titled Development, Reliability and Validity of the Health Risk Behaviors Inventory: A Self-Report Measure of 7 Current Health Risk Behaviors by Leah A. Irish.  The dissertation is a study on undergraduates and about whether they partake in health risk behaviors (physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, inadequate sleep, cigarette smoking, alcohol use, illicit drug use, and risky sexual behaviors).  Health risk behavior was the first idea for a subject heading that I had, but it is not a subject heading.  The other idea I had was health risk assessment, but that is only used as heading for when there are environmental risk factors.  There was no subject headings for anything that had to do with unhealthy behaviors or unhealthiness.  The first subject heading I decided upon was "Health behaviors" because it seems to fit really well.  The other subject heading I decided on was "Undergraduates--Health and hygiene" because it also captures pretty well what the dissertation is about.  The call number for this one was easy peasy.  I didn't need to look anything up on Wikipedia for this one.

650 0Health behavior.
650 0Undergraduates ǂz Health and hygiene.

Sevim didn't think I needed the "Health behavior" subject heading because the "Undergraduates--Health and hygiene" subject heading covered it all.  She also suggested that I add the subdivision "United States" to the "Undergraduates--Health and hygiene" subject heading.  So here are the headings I ended up with:

650 0Undergraduates ǂx Health and hygiene ǂz United States.

The sixth ETD I cataloged today was a creative writing English thesis titled Life in Imperfect Forms by Alexander Todd Cox.  The full text for this ETD was not available, but since it's a piece of creative writing with no overarching theme, I'm pretty sure there would be no subject headings.  So all the work went towards creating a call number.  The call number I came up with was PS3603.O9 L54 2011.  PS3603 is for a contemporary author whose last name starts with the letter C.  The .O9 is the cutter for his name (Cox) starting with the second letter.  The L54 is the cutter for the title.  Sevim suggested that I change the first cutter for this one based on what is in KentLINK, so I decided to change it to O889.

The seventh ETD I cataloged today was an English dissertation titled A Discourse-Based Analysis of Literacy Scholarship in New Media:  The Case of Military Blogs by Patrick William Thomas.  This ETD was another one where the full text had not been released yet.  I had a hard time with this ETD.  It's about literacy sponsorship in relation to military blogs.  I can't really gain anything more than that.  The subject headings that I chose for this were "Soldiers--Blogs," "Digital media," and "Literary patrons."  Wikipedia was helpful to me in choosing "Digital media."  I chose "Literary patrons" because I thought it was the best way to get at the idea of literacy sponsorship.  But I wasn't really sure and decided to ask Sevim for help.  She wasn't satisfied with the "Literary patrons" heading either, but she did like the other two I had chosen.  She also suggested headings for both the War in Iraq and the War in Afganistan subdivided by "Blogs" because those are the wars that the soldiers in the dissertation are a part of.  These were the headings that I ended up with:

650 0Soldiers ǂv Blogs.
650 0Digital media.
650 0Iraq War, 2003- ǂv Blogs.
650 0Afghan War, 2001- ǂv Blogs.

Day 11, Starting Subject Cataloging Batch 3

The first ETD of Batch 3 is a geology thesis titled Engineering geology considerations for realignment of interstate 70/76 across the landslide at New Baltimore, Somerset County, SW Pennsylvania by Lisa Ann Nowicki.  This thesis focuses on investigating the landslide and how it will affect the interstate realignment.  The most obvious subject heading to choose for this thesis was "Landslides--Pennsylvania." I also checked to see if there was a specific entry for the New Baltimore Landslide, but there wasn't a subject heading for that.  The other idea for a subject heading that jumped out at me immediately was for slope stability because I had used that for another ETD and it was mentioned in this one.  So I used the heading "Slope (Soil mechanics)--Stability."  Unfortunately this subject heading can't be subdivided by location, so I can't add Pennsylvania on to it.  I also chose "Landslide hazard analysis--Pennsylvania" because it really seems as if the author is doing a landslide hazard analysis.  Finally, I chose the heading "Engineering geology--Pennsylvania" after using Wikipedia search that lead me to the term geotechnical engineering.  In LCSH, geotechnical engineering leads you to landslide hazard analysis.  I had trouble determining which subject heading to put first in order to make the call number.  The two headings I was debating making the first heading were "Landslides--Pennsylvania" and "Engineering geology--Pennsylvania."  The call number for the former is QE599.P4 N69 2011 and the call number for the latter is TA705.3.P4 N69 2011.  I eventually chose the former after reading the conclusion of the thesis.  It seemed to put much more emphasis on landslides than anything else.  Here are the subject headings I got for this one:

650 0Landslides ǂz Pennsylvania.
650 0Landslide hazard analysis ǂz Pennsylvania.
650 0Slopes (Soil mechanics) ǂx Stability.
650 0Engineering geology ǂz Pennsylvania.

Sevim suggested that I switch "Landslides--Pennsylvania" and "Landslide hazard analysis-Pennsylvania."  I thought this was a good idea and obliged.

The second ETD I cataloged today was a English thesis From Postmodernism to Psychoanalysis: Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 by Brittany N. Adams.  The title of this thesis is pretty informative about its content.  This thesis analyzes the postmodernism and psychoanalytic theory in regards to Pynchon's novel.  From this I got three subject headings.  The first is a name-title entry for Thomas Pynchon and The Crying of Lot 49.  The second is "Postmodernism (Literature)."  The third is "Psychoanalysis and literature."  I couldn't come up with any other headings that were related to the thesis's aboutness.  The call number for this one came from Thomas Pynchon.  It was PS3566.Y55 Z56 2011.  I don't know if I need to make the Z56 something different though.  Here are the subject headings I have:

600 10 Thomas Pynchon. ǂt The crying of lot 49.
650 0 Postmodernism (Literature)
650 0 Psychoanalysis and literature.

Day 11, Descriptive Cataloging

Day 11
10/04/2011
Start time: 8:00
[1 Hour Lunch]
End time: 5:00
Hours Worked: 8
Total Hours: 88

The first part of the day was finishing the descriptive cataloging that I started on Friday for my third batch of ETDs.  I have 20 ETDs to work on in this new batch.  4 of them are restricted, and all the information that I have available for the descriptive and subject cataloging comes from the OhioLINK ETD Center page. This is the breakdown of the ETDs by subject:

Geology:  1
English:  3
Political Science:  2
Art Education:  1
Fine Art:  2
Psychology:  1
Creative Writing:  2
Nursing:  1
Foundations , Leadership, and Administration:  3
Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum:  4

I think this is going to be a rough batch of ETDs.  Some of them seem like they are going to be hard to subject catalog.  We'll see how it goes.
